Ayade Unveils Green Police Cadets, Presents Additional Vehicles
Cross River State governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, yesterday unveiled the cadet cadre of the Green Police, a non-arm bearing outfit, with the presentation of additional vehicles to the officers.
The Green Police is a special marshall established to police , protect and preserve the state’s vast forest reserve.
Presenting the keys to the cadets who were decked in green and ash coloured khaki uniforms, at the Governor’s office, Calabar, Ayade charged them to be diligent and committed to the mandate given to them to protect, police and preserve the state’s rich forest resource as well as the environment without compromise.
“We don’t want to see you compromise by way of an inducement. We don’t expect anybody to compromise because you have a car each to to yourselves and you detect what you should be paid as your allowances,” the governor warned.
Ayade maintained that the Green Police which has the institutional and government powers to enforce the state sanitation laws and policies confers on the cadets the power of arrest, issue of warrants while ensuring that all citizens and residents comply with the state’s sanitation and environmental policies.
Ayade further added: “It is your responsibility to ensure that all drainages are kept clean, all fences painted and kept clean, every single house has a minimum of four trees planted and the environmental contractors ranging from grass cutting to desilting, irrigation, landscaping, urban afforestation renewal, public parks, waste collection and management, remain directly under your control and supervision.”
Referring to the cadets as the green eyes of Africa, the governor said: “If we have to maintain the Calabar status as the most beautiful and cleanest city in the country, all I ask of you is to be soft, diplomatic and gentle while hoping that Cross River will continue to lead and dominate the African landscape when it comes to issues of climate change mitigation.”
To Cross Riverians, Ayade said: “We know you for your cleanliness and good sanitation, this is just to encourage and support you as well as superintend the process, not to police you because we know you are a self compliant people. We love you and want you to live in a cleaner environment.”
He assured Nigerians that Cross River will continue to be a leading light to what true leadership represents, stressing that “Calabar is not only green because of our nature but because we do something about it. It is not a gift, it is an effort and it is this effort that leads to the result that we see today.”
The event featured the presentation of the keys of kia Rio vehicle to each of the cadets.
